Chennaiyin FC have signed Hungarian international and attacking midfielder Vladimir Koman on a season-long contract ahead of ISL 2021-22.

Vladimir’s father Volodymyr Koman is a retired Ukrainian professional footballer. Vladimir was born in Ukraine, but his family moved to the city of Szombathely in Hungary in 1991 and the midfielder was part of the youth setup at local club Szombathelyi Haladás. He turned pro with the club in 2004 and a year later joined Italian Serie A club Sampdoria.

Koman spent a number of years at Sampdoria initially with the U-19 team and then the senior side. He went out on loan to other Italian clubs during his tenure there. Besides Serie A and Serie B, Vladimir also represented the club in the 2010-11 UEFA Europa League.

In 2012, he moved to AS Monaco briefly and over the next few years, Vladimir played mostly top-tier club football in Hungary, Russia, Turkey, Iran and last season in the UAE. Overall in club football, the 32-year-old attacking midfielder has made 322 appearances in which he has scored 22 goals and assisted 23.

Vladimir made his debut for the Hungarian national team in 2016 and has been capped 36 times (7 goals, 7 assists). He was part of the team that played in Euro qualifiers in 2010-11 and World Cup qualifiers in 2012-13.

Koman’s signing fills up the six-foreigner limit at Chennaiyin FC ahead of the new season. Apart from Vladimir, they have retained Rafael Crivellaro and signed Polish forward Łukasz Gikiewicz, Polish midfielder Ariel Borysiuk, Serbian defender Slavko Damjanović, Kyrgyzstan international and forward Mirlan Murzaev this season.
