Kerala Blasters have signed Sporting Gijón striker Álvaro Vázquez on a one-year contract ahead of ISL 2021-22.
From Barcelona, Vázquez was part of RCD Espanyol’s youth setup from 2005 up until he transitioned to RCD Espanyol B – the reserve team of RCD Espanyol in 2009. He played in the then third-tier Segunda División B in his first season with the reserves.
The following season, Álvaro turned for the senior team in La Liga. Over the next few years, he played in the Spanish top-tier for Espanyol and Getafe CF. Overall in La Liga, Vázquez made 154 appearances in which he scored 26 goals and assisted eight.
While the centre-forward was at Getafe, he was loaned out to English Premier League side Swansea City AFC for the 2013-14 season. However, he did not manage a goal in his 12 appearances for the club.
In 2018, Álvaro was loaned out from Espanyol first to Gimnàstic de Tarragona and then Real Zaragoza who were both playing in La Liga 2. Vázquez ended his contract with Espanyol and joined Sporting Gijón in 2019. He spent a season and a half in La Liga 2 with Sporting before going out on loan to another Segunda División side CE Sabadell FC in January 2021. His loan ended in June 2021 and he now joins ISL side Kerala Blasters on a one-year contract.
In La Liga 2, the 6′ tall 30-year-old forward played in 113 matches in which he scored 22 goals and assisted five. Vázquez has represented Spain at youth levels and has also played for the Catalonia national football team. He won the European U-21 Championship with Spain in 2013.
