FC Goa have signed 36-year-old Spanish forward Igor Angulo to replace the ISL‘s all-time top goalscorer Ferrán Corominas.
Born in Bilbao, Angulo spent a large part of his formative years at Athletic Bilbao cantera – the youth academy of Spanish top division club Athletic Bilbao.
In 2003, he made his way up to the reserve side Athletic Bilbao B who were playing in the Segunda División B and around the same time made his debut in La Liga with the senior team. During this period, he also represented Spain at the U19, U20 and U21 levels.
Over the next few years, Igor was loaned out to Spanish club Gimnàstic and French club AS Cannes. Igor left Athletico Bilbao in 2008 and turned up for a number of clubs in Spain, Greece and Cypriot. His stint in Spain saw him play in the top 3 tiers of the Spanish league system – La Liga, Segunda División and Segunda División B.
In 2016, he found his way to the Polish second division side Górnik Zabrze and helped the team win promotion to the top tier Ekstraklasa.
In the 2017-18 Ekstraklasa, Igor emerged as the second highest goalscorer in the league as his team finished fourth by virtue of which they were eligible to compete in the UEFA Europa League qualifying round.
Igor joins 2019-20 league winners FC Goa after spending four seasons at Górnik Zabrze. Last season, he scored 16 and assisted six from 36 appearances in the Polish top-tier. His three seasons in the Polish top-tier have yielded 63 goals and 14 assists from 106 appearances. Angulo also won the Golden Boot in the 2018-19 season.
The Spanish forward who can play on the wings as well has a ready challenge at hand when he comes in to replace Coro. Coro is the all-time goalscorer in the ISL with 48 goals and it’s his performances which have transformed Goa into one of the elite sides in the ISL.
Ferrán Corominas has left FC Goa after refusing the contract offered to him and has cited that he does not feel valued at FC Goa.
Igor’s signing makes him the fifth arrival at FC Goa ahead of the upcoming season. The other players joining him are Redeem Tlang, Makan Winkle Chothe, Devendra Murgaonkar and Sanson Pereira.
I am excited at the prospect of playing for FC Goa and it is an adventure that I am keen to start at the earliest.
What attracted me to the club was that I liked the way of playing, the philosophy. FC Goa is one club that is always on the attack and in doing so, are able to create a beautiful style of football.
Another big thing that stood out is I like the mentality of the club. It’s filled with winners, always fighting for the biggest honours. And that’s what I want to do when I come in.
Igor Angulo
