Chennaiyin FC have announced the signing of 26-year-old midfielder/fullback Edwin Sydney Vanspaul from the 2018-19 I-League Champions Chennai City FC.
The versatile midfielder mostly played as right fullback under Akbar Nawas at Chennai City FC. Possessing good long range passing ability and a tough tackler to boot, Edwin can slot in anywhere on the pitch and could possibly fill in for Inigo Calderon who left Chennaiyin a few months ago.
Edwin hails from Neyveli in Cuddalore and has spent all of his career in Chennai and his latest move to the two-time ISL champions see him continue to ply his football in the Southern capital.
His first break as a serious footballer was with the Indian Bank Recreational Club in the CFA Senior Division where he played as a forward. After a few seasons, he moved to Chennai FC in 2012 and played as a midfielder until his move to Chennai City FC in 2016. At Chennai City FC, he featured as a winger and as a fullback in his first couple of seasons and was deployed at right back in the title-winning 2018-19 season.
The two-time ISL champions Chennaiyin finished bottom of the table in the recently concluded 2018-19 ISL season and the signing of Edwin Vanspaul is possibly the first step on their road to relevance in the upcoming season.
