Churchill Brothers have appointed their former manager Fernando Santiago Varela to replace outgoing coach Antonio Rueda for the rest of the I-League 2022-23 season. Under the Spanish coach Rueda who was appointed earlier this year, CB are eighth in the league with two wins, two draws and three losses from seven games. The sack comes despite Antonio winning his last two matches in charge.
The incoming coach, the Argentine-born Spanish manager Fernando Santiago Varela was at the helm at Churchill during the 2020-21 I-League season in which they finished runners up. Subsequently, he joined I-League newcomers Sreenidi Deccan FC for the I-League 2021-22 season and helped them finish third in the league.
Prior to his first stint with the Red Machines, Varela was the manager at Gokulam Kerala FC with whom he won the Kerala Premier League and the Durand Cup.
With the league winners this season to be promoted to the ISL, the stakes are high for both the club and the 49-year-old Varela who is a UEFA Pro Licence holder.
