
Bengaluru FC have announced the signing of Australian defender Aleksandar Jovanovic on a one-year contract ahead of the new season.
From Sydney, Jovanovic was part of the academy at local club APIA during his formative years. He made his pro debut with NSW club Parramatta FC following which he joined Serbian club FK Vojvodina in 2008. He was sent out on loan by the club to play in the Serbian second tier – the PrvaLiga for a couple of seasons. In 2011, he moved to Serbian top tier club FK Hajduk Kula and made his debut in the Serbian SuperLiga.
2012 saw Aleksandar move to Thailand to play for Police Tero FC and in 2013, he switched to South Korea initially to play for K League 2 side Suwon FC followed by a number of years in K League 1 with Jeju United. This period in the K-League also included a detour to play in the Chinese Super League in 2016 with Tianjin Jinmen Tiger FC.
After turning up very briefly for FK Željezničar Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina Premijer Liga in 2020, Jovanovic has been at A-League club Macarthur FC over the last two seasons – from where he joins Bengaluru FC.
Last season, the 6’5″ centre-back made 20 appearances in the A-League. Overall in his club career, he has made 242 appearances (His stats from Thailand are not available). At BFC, he will also fulfil the Asian foreign player quota set by AFC.
The 32-year-old is the third foreign arrival at BFC in the transfer window with Fijian forward Roy Krishna and Spanish midfielder Javi Hernandez moving to the club recently.
