Chennaiyin FC have signed veteran East Bengal FC midfielder Mohammed Rafique on a two-year contract ahead of the upcoming season.
From Kolkata, Rafique spent his formative years at CFL club Tollygunge Agragami. He began his senior club career with United SC (formerly known as Prayag United and Chirag United) in 2010 in the I-League. Then in 2014, Rafique joined East Bengal FC and continued playing in the I-League. He won the Durand Cup and the IFA Shield with United SC and won the Calcutta Premier Division with East Bengal FC four times.
The midfielder was loaned out and drafted to play in the ISL for ATK in 2014 & 2015 and for Kerala Blasters in 2016. He scored the championship winning goal for ATK in the 2014 ISL final in the 90th minute.
Rafique switched over to play permanently in the ISL in 2018 – first with Mumbai City FC for two seasons and then East Bengal FC over the last two seasons.
Overall, the 31-year-old has played in over 80 I-League games and has made 65 appearances in the ISL so far. He made his national team debut for India in 2016 and has been capped 12 times.
