Mumbai City FC have signed former Odisha FC forward Diego Mauricio to replace Ygor Catatau. The 30-year-old Brazilian striker Mauricio has joined the defending champions MCFC for the remainder of the ISL 2021-22 season.

The outgoing Brazilian Catatau was originally signed on a season-long loan deal, but now leaves the club halfway into the season. In his brief tenure at Mumbai City, Ygor featured in 11 matches in which he scored three goals and assisted one.

Diego is no stranger to India having turned up for Odisha FC in the 2020-21 ISL season. He was prolific for the club with 12 goals and two assists coming from 20 matches – he was part of all the matches OFC played in the league that season.

Mauricio was part of Flamengo’s academy during his formative years and transitioned to the senior team who were competing in the Brazilian top-tier Série A. He went onto play club football in Russia, Portugal, Saudia Arabia, South Korea, Thailand and China.

Diego played alongside Ronaldinho at Flamengo early in his career and was part of the Brazilian U-20 setup in 2011 alongside players like Neymar, Casemiro, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

Post the 2020-21 season with Odisha FC, the forward joined Qatari club Al-Shahania SC – he joins Mumbai City FC on a free transfer from the club.
