Northeast United FC have signed seasoned ISL campaigner Marcelinho on loan from I-League newcomers Rajasthan United FC for the rest of the 2021-22 season. The 34-year-old Brazilian attacker decided on the move after the uncertainty surrounding the resumption of the I-League which has been suspended due to COVID-19.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Marcelinho was part of the academy at local club Flamengo after which he found his way to Atlético Madrid B in 2006. A season later he was at Getafe CF B and over the next few years played club football in Brazil, Greece, UAE and Italy before arriving in India in 2016 to join Delhi Dynamos FC. He won the Golden Boot with the club in his very first year in India.
Besides Delhi Dynamos, over the years, Marcelinho has represented FC Pune City, Hyderabad FC, Odisha FC and ATK Mohun Bagan in the ISL. Overall in the league, he has played in 79 matches in which he scored 33 goals and assisted 18 making him the all-time fifth highest goalscorer in the ISL.
In November of 2021, Marcelo Pereira joined newly-promoted I-League side Rajasthan United FC. However with the league a non-starter after a single round of games, the attacking midfielder/winger decided to move to NEUFC who themselves were looking to replace the injured Federico Gallego.
