Born in the capital city of Fort-de-France in Martinique, Mathias spent his developmental years at the academy of Le Havre AC based in Normandy, France. He made his senior debut with French lower division club AS Beauvais in 2007 and spent the next few years turning up for other French clubs and also played in the league in Martinique for a few months.
In January, 2011, Coureur moved to Spain with Orihuela CF and spent the next three and a half seasons in the third tier – albeit with different clubs. He won the 2011-12 Segunda División B with CD Atlético Baleares.
Then, in 2014, Mathias moved to Bulgaria and played in the top-tier league for the next few years with various clubs up until the 2020-21 season. He also had brief spells representing clubs in the Kazakhstan Premier Liga, Korean K League 1 and in Georgia during this period.
Last season, he spent the first half with Cherno More in the Bulgarian Parva Liga where he scored 15 goals in 15 matches. The second half of the season, Coureur represented Samsunspor in the Turkish second tier – he managed a return of four goals from 17 appearances. He joins NEUFC from the Turkish second tier on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old centre-forward made his debut for the Martinique national team in 2013 and has been capped seven times since. He has also played in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers (Dinamo Tbilisi) and Europa League qualifiers (Cherno More). Overall in his club career, Mathias has made 297 appearances in which he has scored 71 goals and assisted 20.
