Odisha FC have signed former Serie A, La Liga, Eredivisie and Bundesliga forward Jonathas de Jesus ahead of the ISL 2021-22 season.
From the town of Betim in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, Jonathas spent his developmental years at Cruzeiro. He was promoted to the senior squad in 2006 and was sent out on loan over the next couple of years to clubs in the state. In 2008, he returned to Cruzeiro and made a couple of appearances in the Brazilian Serie A. That same year, Jesus moved to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar’s U-21 team.
Jonathas was promoted to the senior team at AZ in January 2010 and made a handful of appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons following which he transferred to Italy and played a season each in the Serie A with Brescia, Pescara and Torino FC. He also featured in second tier Serie B during his time in Italy.
In 2014, Jonathas switched over to La Liga in Spain with Elche CF – first on loan from Pescara and later permanently. The following season, he turned up for Real Sociedad.
Over the next few years, Jesus played club football in Russian Premier Liga with Rubin Kazan, German Bundesliga with Hannover 96 and last season in the UAE Pro League with Hatta (on loan from Sharjah FC). This period of his career also included brief spells with Brazilian club Corinthians and in La Liga 2 with Elche.
Overall in his career, Jonathas has played 286 matches in club football in which he has scored 101 goals and assisted 32. The 6’3″ former Brazilian U-19 international has also featured in the Europa League with AZ Alkmaar.
