Juan Antonio González Fernández started his professional career with the reserve teams of Deportivo de La Coruña and Real Madrid (Deportivo Fabril and Real Madrid Castilla) who were then competing in the Spanish third tier Segunda División B.
In 2011, Juanan moved to Germany with Fortuna Düsseldorf, helped them win promotion to the Bundesliga and went on to play in the German top tier the following season with the club. Over the next few years, he played club football in Hungary before returning to Spain and playing in La Liga 2 for a season each with Recreativo de Huelva and CD Leganés.
Juanan signed with Bengaluru FC in 2016 and played in the 2016-17 I-League. He was given an extension on his contract the following season when Bengaluru FC switched over to the ISL. A rock at the back, the 6′ 4″ defender was instrumental in Bengaluru FC picking up the 2018-19 ISL Championship, the Federation Cup in 2017 and the Super Cup in 2018.
The 34-year-old was released by Bengaluru FC late in June this year and brings his catalogue of experience to the club. He has featured in 350 matches at club level. In the ISL alone, he has played in 71 matches (5 goals, 1 assist) over five seasons.
