Odisha FC have wrapped up the signing of midfielder Isaac Vanmalsawma on a two-year deal with an option to extend it by another year.
From Lunglei, Mizoram, the 24-year-old was part of the AIFF Elite Academy during the years 2012 and 2014. Isaac has represented India at the Under 16, Under 19 levels and has been capped once for the senior men’s team. After his stint at the academy, Vanmalsawma was part of Shillong Lajong’s youth team before making his debut with the senior team in the 2015-16 I-League season.
After a couple of seasons at Shillong, Isaac was drafted into the ISL side, FC Pune City, for the 2017-18 season. The following season (2018-19), Isaac completed a move to Chennaiyin FC and contributed with a goal and an assist from 13 appearances in the ISL. Over the last two seasons, Isaac was with Jamshedpur FC – last season he featured frequently for the club with 16 appearances in the 2020-21 ISL.
Overall in the ISL, the versatile attacking midfielder has featured in 50 matches.
Analyst’s Take (Amrit, Shlok)
Very flexible player and could perform a number of roles for them. Can be a consistent performer around whom the younger players can thrive at Odisha.
Amrit
Adds depth to that left flank. Wasn’t really a starter at Jamshedpur, and will be facing competition from the likes of Nandha, Bodo and maybe even Daniel at Odisha.
Shlok
Crossing is his strong suit and he finds himself doing it closer to the edge of the box than the touch line. Takes free kicks occasionally from wide as well.
