Former East Bengal and ATK Mohun Bagan defender Salam Ranjan Singh has joined Chennaiyin FC on a two-year deal.
The 25-year-old centre back is a product of the now dissolved Pune FC. As a player for the Pune FC U-19 team, he won back-to-back youth I-League titles. He made his I-League debut for the senior team in the 2013-14 season against Sporting Clube de Goa and was also part of the Pune FC side which played in the AFC Cup competition in 2014.
In 2015, Singh moved to Bengaluru FC and won the I-League 2015-16 and the Federation Cup in 2017 with the Blues. Interspersed between his stint at Bangalore was a draft move to Northeast United in the ISL. He made his ISL debut in 2016 against FC Pune City.
2017 saw Salam move to East Bengal FC who were playing in the I-League at that time. A couple of years later he moved to ATK and picked the ISL Championship winners medal at the end of the 2019-20 season. He spent last season as well at the club and moves to Chennaiyin FC ahead of the 2021-22 season.
While in the I-League, Ranjan clocked over 50 appearances, game time in the ISL has been hard to come by. In three seasons in the ISL, he has only featured in seven matches – last season he only made a solitary appearance for ATKMB in the ISL.
The 6’1″ Manipur-based defender has represented India at the U-23 and the senior level winning the Tri-nation series (2017) and the Intercontinental Cup (2018). He has been capped on 11 occasions for the senior national team.
Analyst’s Take (Amrit)
Tall and physically strong defender. Good in the air and a potential threat from set pieces. Still needs to work on his distribution and if he does, might finally find some game time this season.
