Sporting de Gijón midfielder Hernán Santana has joined Mumbai City FC on loan for the 2020-21 edition of the Indian Super League.
A product of UD Las Palmas, Santana made his debut for the senior team in the 2010-11 Segunda División season against AD Alcorcón. He helped the club win promotion to the La Liga for the 2015-16 season after winning against Real Zaragoza in the 2014-15 Segunda División play-off finals. At Las Palmas, Hernán played under current Mumbai City FC manager Sergio Lobera between the years 2012 and 2014.
After two and a half seasons in the Spanish top tier, Hernán moved backed to the second tier Segunda División with Sporting Gijón in the 2018 January transfer window. The 30-year-old central midfielder joins Mumbai City FC on a one-year loan deal from Gijón.
Over the course of his career in the top divisions in Spain and the cup competition Copa del Rey, Hernán has made 164 appearances in which he scored 10 goals and assisted four.
I’ve known Sergio Lobera from my time in Spain. He is a highly respected coach back home and I had two fantastic years playing under him.
He played a major role in bringing me here to Mumbai City, and the vision and the ambitions of the club made the decision even easier for me.
The ISL has a huge profile in Spain and in Europe and the steady rise in the quality of the league is for everyone to see.
Hernán Santana to MCFC
Hernán is someone I have worked with in the past in Spain. He is a hard worker, on and off the ball and he adds a lot of character and experience into our squad.
I spoke to Hernán in our conversations about the things we want to achieve here at Mumbai City and he has been committed to our vision since the very start.
I am delighted to have him with us and I am sure our supporters will also enjoy seeing a player of Hernán’s calibre.
