Mumbai City FC have signed 2019-20 ISL Hero of the League Hugo Boumous from FC Goa after paying out the buyout clause reportedly worth INR 1.6 crores.
Of French-Moroccan nationality, Hugo was born in Rennes, France, and spent his formative years at the academy of Stade Lavallois FC. He transitioned to the senior team in the 2014-15 season and made his French Ligue 2 debut against Chamois Niortais FC.
In 2016, he moved to Moroccan club Moghreb Tétouan under the tutelage of current Mumbai City FC coach Sergio Lobera. After almost two seasons in the Moroccan first tier Botola Pro 1, Boumous followed his manager to FC Goa in February of 2018 and made a few appearances towards the end of the 2017-18 season.
The last two seasons in the ISL, Boumous has been one of the standout players in the tournament. He helped FC Goa win the league last season and picked up the 2019-20 Hero of the League award for his trailblazing year with the Gaurs. The season before last, he won the Super Cup with FC Goa (2019). Cumulatively, in two and a half seasons in the ISL, he featured in 42 matches in which he has scored 16 goals and assisted 17.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder follows his coach Lobera now to Mumbai City FC on a two-year deal which will keep him in Mumbai till 2022. Sergio Lobera left FC Goa under acrimonious circumstances last season and besides Hugo Boumous and Mandar Rao Dessai who left Goa, Ahmed Jahouh and Mourtada Fall are expected to sign for the Islanders in the next few days.
It is a huge honour for me to be joining a club like Mumbai City.
It is no secret that I have had a very successful working relationship with coach Sergio Lobera. He knows how to bring out the best in me and I am delighted to be joining him and my new teammates at this ambitious club.
I had a great last season but I want to get better and I want to win trophies.
