Northeast United have wrapped up the signing of 33-year-old Belgian defender Benjamin Lambot ahead of the 2020-21 Indian Super League.
Born in Etterbeek, Belgium, Lambot was part of Belgian clubs RWS Bruxelles and RWD Molenbeek during his youth career. He then signed a youth contract with AFC Tubize in 2001 and made his way to the first team in 2004 – the club were competing in the Belgian second tier back then. The centre-back helped the club achieve promotion in the 2007-08 season and featured briefly for them in the top flight the following season. He was sent out on loan in the January window to second tier club Royal Excelsior Virton.
Once the loan period ended, Benjamin joined Royal Antwerp FC midway into 2009 – the club were playing in the second tier Belgian First Division B at that point in time. He was there at the club for three seasons following which he joined Belgian top division side Lierse SK in 2012.
After a couple of seasons in the top flight with Lierse, Lambot played club football in Azerbaijan briefly before returning to the Belgian second tier with Cercle Brugge KSV. He helped the club win promotion to the Belgian First Division in the 2017-18 season and played in the top tier the year after.
Last season, the 6′ 2″ defender was at Cyprus-based Nea Salamis Famagusta FC – from where he joins Northeast United on a free transfer.
Over the course of his career mostly in Belgium, Benjamin has made over 250 appearances in the top two leagues in Belgium.
