East Bengal FC have appointed former Northeast United assistant manager Francisco Jose Bruto Da Costa as Head Coach for the 2020-21 season.

Bruto Da Costa was assistant coach at Northeast United when Nelo Vingada was at the helm in 2016. He followed the Portuguese coach as his deputy to the Malaysian National Team in 2017.

Before his stint with NEUFC, Francisco was assistant coach with the Indian U-14, U-17 and U-19 teams. He was also a coach at the AIFF Elite Academy.

Bruto Da Costa has over 14 years of coaching experience and is an AFC ‘A’ and Pro license holder.

With East Bengal’s ISL hopes dashed this season due to lack of investors and the ISL organisers deciding to go with 10 teams, the Red & Gold Brigade will compete in the 2020-21 I-League.

For Francisco Jose Bruto Da Costa, this will be his first major assignment as first-team coach. He will replace the outgoing Spanish coach Mario Rivera Campesino who had taken over from Alejandro Menéndez in January this year.

However, East Bengal officials have stated that if the club manages to get into the ISL, then Bruto Da Costa might take up the role of an assistant coach.
