East Bengal FC have appointed Mario Rivera Campesino as the new manager of the club and he replaces the outgoing Alejandro Menéndez. The Spaniard who had served under Menéndez as the assistant coach last season is expected to take over the reins in the first week of February.

The 42-year-old holds a UEFA Pro Licence and has coached Spanish lower division clubs Unión Collado and CD Los Yébenes. He was the manger for the Brunei U-21 side before joining the Red & Yellow Brigade last season as assistant manager.

For a brief period, the former Bengaluru FC manager Ashley Westwood was touted as the replacement for Alejandro, but the club stuck with familiarity with Mario aware of the players and tactics under the former coach.

The former Real Madrid youth coach Alejandro stepped down as the manager citing personal reasons after the derby defeat to Mohun Bagan a couple of weeks ago. He had led the team to a second-place finish in the I-League last season which was their best ever finish in 14 years. QEBFC also won the Kolkata derby twice over last year.

There are rumours abound that the sale of a few vital players, Quess’s cost-cutting measures, the team’s tepid form this season and disagreement with the club officials led to Alejandro resigning from his post.
