Northeast United sack Robert Jarni and appoint Khalid Jamil as caretaker manager

Robert Jarni

Northeast United FC have announced the departure of Head Coach Robert Jarni late on Monday night. The Croatian was appointed before the start of the current ISL season in August of 2019.

A former teammate of current Indian team Head Coach Igor Štimac for the Croatian NT, Jarni has managed to put together only two wins in 15 matches with the Highlanders. NEUFC are currently ninth on the table with three games left in the season.

They went out of contention for the top 4 a while ago in this year’s ISL. Last season, under coach Eelco Schattorie, Northeast United qualified for the ISL play-offs for the first time in their brief existence as a club. However, the coach was not offered an extension and he found his way Kerala Blasters during the summer.

With a season-ending injury to marquee signing Asamoah Gyan, Federico Gallego struggling to find fitness and Panagiotis Triadis released, the former Croatian youth team coach had his task cut out and eventually his journey in Indian football was cut short.

Assistant Coach Khalid Jamil will be the interim manager for the remainder of the season.
