Here’s the list of foreign player signings made by Northeast United FC ahead of the ISL 2022-23 season. The Uruguayan talisman for NEUFC over the years Federico Gallego has left the club.


Jon Gaztañaga

-31-year-old Spanish midfielder can also play as a centre back.

-A youth product of Real Sociedad, he turned pro with Real Sociedad B in 2009 and played in the Segunda Division B (third tier).

-Played in La Liga 2 with Ponferradina, Numancia and Gimnastic. Featured briefly in the top-tier La Liga for the Real Sociedad senior team (8 appearances).

-Has also played club football in Cyprus and Romania.

-The 6’0″ centre mid has represented Spain at youth levels.

-Was with Cultural Leonesa last season in the Spanish third tier.

-Has made 300 appearances at club level and has eight goals and five assists to his credit.

Jon is very experienced midfielder who has played a the highest level. He can control the
tempo of the game and contribute both offensively and defensively.

We are confident that Jon will be one of our leaders this season both on and off the field.

And we are happy that Jon is now a highlander.

Michael Jakobsen

-36-year-old centre-back and Danish international last turned up for Adelaide United in the A-League.

-Was scouted by Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in 2003; he ended up making one appearance for the club in 2004 in the Dutch top tier Eredivisie.

-After PSV, Jakobsen spent a number of years playing in the Danish top tier (Superligaen) for Aalborg BK and Esbjerg fB among others.

-Played in both La Liga and La Liga 2 briefly for UD Almeria; Michael also played for a short period in the Norwegian top tier (Eliteserien).

-Switched to A-League in 2016 has spent the last six seasons there with Melbourne City and Adelaide United.

-Has won the Danish Championship and the Australian Cup twice.

-The 6’1″ defender who can also play in midfield has made a total of 484 appearances at club level scoring 22 goals and assisting 11.

-Has been capped for the Danish National Team six times and has represented Denmark at youth level across multiple age categories.


Matt Derbyshire

-36-year-old English striker spent last season with AEK Larnaca FC in the Cypriot First Division.

-From Lancashire, Matt spent his formative years at Darwen FC. He joined Blackburn Rovers in 2003 and played in the English Premier League for a few seasons.

-Spent a number of seasons in the second tier English Championship featuring for Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United among others. Also played briefly in the English League One and League Two.

-Has also played club football in Cyprus, Australia and Greece with Olympiacos and Omonia Nicosia some of the clubs he represented.

-Won the English League Cup with Birmingham City FC and the Greek Super League and Domestic Cup with Olympiacos.

-Overall, Derbyshire has made 497 appearances in club football in which he scored 172 goals and assisted 36.


Romain Philippoteaux

-34-year-old French winger has signed a two-year contract with Northeast United FC.

-Spent all of his career playing club football in France predominantly in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

-Some of the clubs Philippoteaux featured prominently for are FC Lorient, AJ Auxerre and Dijon FCO.

-Has made a total of 327 appearances in club football scoring 55 goals and assisting 35.


Aaron Evans

-27-year-old Australian centre-back started his pro career with local club Canberra City FC.

-The former Australian U-19 player spent a bulk of his career in the Indonesia Liga 1 racking up well over a 100 appearances.

-Has also played club football in Laos, Hong Kong and Thailand.

-Won the Piala Indonesia Cup in 2019 with PSM Makassar.

-The 6’0″ defender can also play at right back and as a defensive midfielder.
