Over the years, Shillong Premier League has been a vital force behind the success of most of the clubs from the city. In the past decade, it has produced footballers who went on to play at major clubs and leagues in the country.
Started in 2010, the League is organised by the Shillong Sports Association, an affiliated association of the Meghalaya Football Association. The League has witnessed Shillong Lajong FC lift the trophy 4 times, Royal Wahingdoh FC 3 times and Langsning FC twice.
Today’s fixtures (June 16) in the Officer’s Choice Blue Shillong Premier League is set out to draw a crowd as the young Shillong Lajong FC side is looking to defend their title against an experienced Langsning FC at 4 PM, Third Ground.
Shillong Lajong FC established in 1983, was the first club from the Northeastern region to participate in the Hero I-League after getting promoted from the 2nd Division League. Over the years, it became the development hub for young talent not only from the state, but the Northeast region as a whole. In this edition of the SPL, the club is fielding the youngest set of footballers such as Henry Ford Nongeng, Saveme Tariang, Sangti Janai Shianglong, Tremiki Lamurong and Wadajied Kynsai Ryngkhlem, who have already made a name for themselves having represented the State at the Junior and Senior level.

Langsning FC is one of the teams who have been a regular in the SPL as well as football in the State. Deriving its name from one of the prominent localities in Shillong, Jaiaw Langsning, it lifted the trophy in 2017 & 2018. The club have also been crowned champions of the then Shillong League in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2005. Founded in 1954, the club featured in four seasons of the 2nd Division League. This season, they signed experienced Dibinroy Nongspung, Rokhih Nongtdu and Batiphar Swer alongside the likes of Kitborlang Pale, Figo Syndai and Kynsaibor Lhuid who are leading the line.
