The Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 bubble was breached as the league announced on Saturday that an ATK Mohun Bagan player tested positive for coronavirus.
ATK Mohun Bagan had the season’s 53rd match against Odisha FC scheduled for Saturday, January 8 but the league announced that the game was postponed due to Covid-19 case. The organisers said the fixture may be rescheduled to a later date.
“The decision has been taken in consultation with the League’s medical team after an ATK Mohun Bagan player tested positive for Covid-19.
“The League will work closely with the medical experts to monitor and ensure the safety of all the players and support staff in the squad and others involved,” the league’s statement read.
The player who tested positive was not named in the announcement but the rest of the team members will now go into isolation and they will have to undergo fresh tests.
Apart from ATK Mohun Bagan, FC Goa also had a Covid scare due to which they did not train for four days and the players and staff were in isolation.
It was reported by Times of India that on Friday, coach Derrick Pereira conducted a full training session at the Sesa ground in Sirsaim while a couple of players continued to stay in isolation as a precautionary measure.
FC Goa have their match against Chennaiyin FC on Saturday as the second match of the double header day.
“It has not been an ideal preparation for the match but these type of hurdles and circumstances keep coming our way,” Pereira said in the media interaction before the match.
“Our focus should be on the game. We have to plan this well and put our best foot forward. We have to focus more on our game and improve from the last match,” he added.
FC Goa are currently ninth in the points table with only nine points from as many matches. Chennaiyin FC, on the other hand, are sixth with 14 points from nine games.
