Northeast United FC have announced the signing of 17-year-old Indian Arrows attacking midfielder Ninthoinganba Meetei.

A product of the AIFF Elite Academy, Meetei represented Indian in the U-17 World Cup held in India in 2017. Following his stint with the Elite Academy, the Imphal-based player joined Indian Arrows for the 2017-18 season and made nine appearances.

In the recently concluded I-League season (2018-19), Meetei made 15 appearances and got on the scoresheet twice and was a vital part of the campaign where Indian Arrows finished an impressive eighth out of 11 teams.

Meetei drew admiration for his commitment after getting on the pitch three days after losing his father during the national camp for the U-17 world cup. Hailing from a simple background – his mother sells fish while his father used to be a farmer – Meetei’s characterstic grit and determination bodes well for the future.

And his move to a big ISL club like Northeast United is well-deserved and at the same time keeps him close to home. The teenager has also recently been selected to represent the Indian National U-19 team in the Granatkin Memorial tournament in Russia which commences on June 4th. India are clubbed together in Group A with hosts Russia, Bulgaria and Moldova.
