Churchill Brothers continue their unbeaten run in the Goa Professional League with a 6-1 thrashing of Salgaocar FC. Dempo SC climbs up to third in the table, while Panjim Footballers register their first win of the season.
Churchill Brothers hammer Salgaocar
Churchill Brothers SC hammered Salgaocar FC 6-1 in the Goa Professional League match played at Rosary grounds, Navelim.
Boosted by braces from Clencio Pinto and Uttam Rai, Churchill Brothers stretch their unbeaten run in the league to 11 matches.
The young Salgaocar team started the match with good possession with Ronaldo Oliveira and Samson Pereira failing to make the best of the chances. However, Churchill’s Nickson Castanha smashed in yet another free kick for his side in the 15th minute to give his side the lead.
After the break, the Red Machines seized the initiative. The second goal was scored in the 54th minute. when Clencio profiting a deflected shot off Uttam Rai.
At the hour mark, Uttam Rai scored the third to put the match to bed. The Salgaocar keeper’s rushed clearance hit the striker and the ball rolled into the net.
Two minutes later, Churchill scored the fourth goal. Clencio reacting swiftly to a save by the Salcaogar keeper off a shot by Nicholas.
Devendra Murgaonkar pulled a goal back for Salgaocar FC in the 78th minute. However, Churchill Brothers scored two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the game through Gilbert Oliveria and Uttam Rai.
With the win, Churchill Brothers move to 24 points, while Salgaocar FC is two points ahead at 26.
Dempo SC shuts out Signals
Dempo Sports Club beat Corps of Signals 2-1 at the Signals Ground.
The goalscorers for Dempo Sports Club were Beevan D’Mello and Kirtikesh Gadekar while Pawan Thakur scored for Signals team.
All three goals were scored in the first session as Dempo’s points tally go up to 26, while the Army Men are on 10.

Panjim Footballers register first win of the season
Panjim Footballers registered their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Corps of Signals at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa.
Daryl Costa scored the lone goal of the match in the 85th minute after Corps of Signals’ Om Prakash received marching orders with a straight red after he hit an opposition player.
The capital city side looked promising from the first whistle as they constantly raided the rival citadel with Cyril Dias and Clifton Fernandes –both coming close to scoring but they just failed to find the mark. Daryl also saw his effort saved by the keeper as Panjim dominated the first session and didn’t give much chance for the opponents. The teams were tied goalless at the break.
The start of the second half provided a moment which gave Panjim the upper hand. Forty seconds after the restart, Signals defender Om Prakash Bhogta was given his marching order for violent conduct.
The 10-man Signals struggled to catch up the young Panjim side. However, the Army Men could only hold the fort till the 85th minute when Daryl smartly tapped the ball over the Signals keeper Binu to claim the first three points of the season.
Panjim now has eight points, while Corps of Signals have 10 points.
