
Churchill Brothers remain unbeaten in the Goa Professional League, while Guardian Angel SC are hot on the heels of the Red Machines. Panjim Footballers are out of the relegation zone.
Churchill Brothers continue unbeaten run
Churchill Brothers SC registered a comfortable 3-0 over Velsao Sports and Cultural Club at the Rosary Grounds, Navelim.
The I-League team controlled the proceedings from the start but was met with a resolute Velsao defense to end the first half goalless.
Churchill Brothers SC took the lead in the 57th minute. Defender Rohan Adnaik sent a deep cross from the left flank inside the box. Clencio Pinto placed the ball to the far corner.
Churchill Brothers doubled the lead in the 68th minute when substitute, Lalbabu Mahto, handled the ball inside the box. Gilbert Oliveira stepped up to the spot kick and converted the penalty.
The scoreline was completed in the 85th minute. Uttam Rai finished off a cross from the right flank to leave Velsao keeper, Mascarenhas, with little chance.
With this win, Churchill Brothers have now collected seventeen points from nine matches while Velsao Sports and Cultural Club are on 11 points from twelve matches.
Guardian Angel beats Vasco Sports Club
Guardian Angel Sports Club left it late to beat Vasco Sports Club with a 1-0 win in the Goa Professional League at Navelim.
Vasco’s newest recruit Penn Orji was handed his debut. The former East Bengal and Kerala Blasters midfielder was expected to bolster the midfield.
The match with an early chance for Guardian Angel when midfielder Nicholas Rodrigues had a shot at goal. Vasco keeper Sanju Thapa was at hand to make a save.
Vasco began to dominate the possession and Aman Govekar’s shot from outside the box missed the target in the 15-minute mark. In the 31st minute, Nigerian striker Henry’s shot flew over the bar.
After the break, Vasco fashioned an early chance in the 48th minute when Henry’s overhead kick missed the target from six yards.
The chances continued to come Vasco’s way, but poor finishing and goalkeeping heroics by Ozen Silva ensured that the match remained scoreless. Schubert Pereira and substitute Beneston Barretto the guilty party in fluffing their lines.
Guardian Angels stunned the Port Towners in the 83rd minute. A Clinton Niasso cross was headed in by Ashley Araujo to make it 1-0 for the Curchorem side.

Guardian Angel and Panjim Footballers share spoils
A late goal by Clinton Niasso helped Guardian Angel Sports Club to hold Panjim Footballers to a 1-1 draw at the Duler Stadium.
The match was restricted to the midfield play for the major parts of the first session. However, Panjim had the chance to take the early lead when Daryl Costa’s shot went wide off the mark.
Angels also came close to scoring in the 35th minute when Allwyn Vaz found Aslon Oliveira with a perfect low cross but the midfielder’s weak effort failed to trouble the Panjim custodian, Massom Ali.
Minutes before the half-time break, Delton Colaco latched on to a long ball from Joyson. However, the youngster failed to beat Ozen Silva from close range.
In the 66th minute, the Panjim managed to break the deadlock. Skipper Snedden found Delton with a low cross in the box and the winger pounced on to the opportunity to make it 1-0.
The Curchorem came up with a series of attacks, only to be denied by the brilliance of Massom Ali. In the 84th minute, a cross by Nicholas Rodrigues from the left flank was tapped in by Clinton Niasso to steal the point.
Massom Ali ensured that the match ended in the draw in added time. A header by Guardian Angel substitute, Alvito Miranda, was pushed out for a corner.
Stalemate between Churchill and Vasco
Churchill Brothers held Vasco Sports Club to a 1-1 draw in the Goa Professional League match played at Rosary Ground, Navelim.
Vasco SC had the better of the chances in the first half. Former Real Kashmir FC forward, Henry Ezeh, had a shot at goal, which produced a save by Sanju Thapa. Vasco’s other foreign signing, Penn Orji, saw his free-kick from outside the penalty area narrowly miss the mark.
The Port Towners went ahead in the 48th minute. Beneston Barretto tapped in a pass from Penn Orji to give Vasco SC the lead.
However, the joy was shortlived as Churchill Brothers equalized within six minutes. Clencio Pinto’s shot at goal was handled inside the penalty area and the referee pointed towards the spot. Gilbert Oliveira stepped up and converted his penalty kick to make it 1-1.
The rest of the match saw both sides lose their heads as six players were booked by the referee. In the 86th minute, Penn Orji received his second yellow card and was sent off for a rash tackle.
The Red Machines had the chance to win the match late on. Clencio Pinto sprinted up the left flank and played a cross in the box for Uttam Rai. Unfortunately for the striker, the ball landed straight into the keeper’s arm.
After this draw, Churchill Brothers have now collected 18 points from 10 matches, while Vasco SC is on 11 points from 13 matches.
