Chennaiyin FC have signed forward Jobby Justin on a two-year contract ahead of the ISL 2021-22 season.

From Trivandrum, Kerala, Jobby’s first big break came when he signed for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) team. He went on to represent Kerala in the Santosh Trophy and his performances caught the eye of East Bengal FC who signed him in July 2017. After a quiet first year at East Bengal, he helped the club to a second-placed finish in the 2018-19 I-League with nine goals in 17 appearances.

The following season, he signed for ATK and won the 2019-20 ISL Championship with the club (10 appearances, 1 goal). He retained his place when ATK merged with Mohun Bagan AC to form ATK Mohun Bagan – however, an ACL injury in October 2020 ruled him out for the entirety of last season.

Jobby made his debut for the national team in 2019 and has been capped three times so far.

As he makes his comeback from injury, the 27-year-old has an opportunity to get back in to the scheme of things and he will likely have lesser competition for striking positions compared to ATKMB who were stacked upfront.

Analyst’s Take (Amrit)

Jobby could bring pace, work rate and goals to a Chennaiyin FC side that struggled in all those areas last season.

Capable of playing centrally or off the wing, he will mostly be a regular in the side.
