Salgaocar remain on top as Stephen Satarkar goes on a goal-scoring spree, Guardian Angel score late to salvage draws, while FC Goa bounce back after their loss on the opening day.
Stephen Satarkar can’t stop scoring for Salgaocar
Salgaocar has had a 100 percent start to the 2020-21 Goa Pro League season. With three wins out of three, the Green Brigade leads the GPL table with 9 points.
A 5-0 demolition of Churchill Brothers was followed up with a 3-0 win over Velsao SCC.
Stephen Satarkar was the hattrick hero in the win over Churchill as the substitute came off the bench and broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. The final fifteen minutes saw Salgaocar run riot as Satarkar scored in the 76th and 79th minute to complete his hattrick.
Steflon D’costa and another substitute Fhezer Gomes scored late in the game to complete the rout.
Satarkar continued his form in the next round against Velsao, scoring in the 39th and 78th minute. Valentino Nazareth helped himself to a goal in the 88th minute as Salgaocar ran out 3-0 winners.
The Mormugao team have now scored 10 goals and conceded none in three matches.
Churchill and Panjim open their accounts
Churchill Brothers bounced back from the 5-0 thrashing with a 1-0 win over Panjim Footballers. Rakesh Dias scored the lone goal of the match in the 41st minute to register their first win of the league.
Panjim had previously beaten Youth Club of Manora in the second round courtesy a Chandan Gawas goal which was scored three minutes into the second half.
The two teams occupy the 8th and 9th spot, with Panjim higher up the table courtesy a superior goal difference.
Sporting Clube see off Vasco
Sporting Clube de Goa is the other unbeaten team following their 1-0 win over Vasco SC at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa.
Dattaraj Gaonkar scored the only goal of the game in the first half stoppage time when he headed in a cross from Girish Naik. Sanju Thapa the Vasco custodian could only watch the ball fly in.
The Flaming Oranje have six points in two matches.
Joaquim steps up for Vasco
Vasco SC made amends with 1-0 win over SESA in the next round. The winning goal was scored under contentious circumstances.
In the 86th minute Veteran forward Joaquim Abranches connected with a cross from Anil Goankar to hit the back of the net, but also collided with the SESA goalkeeper who had attempted to make a clearance.
The SESA bench protested but the referee upon consultation with the assistant awarded the goal. The Port Towners held on to the lead to take their tally to six points from three matches.
Guardian Angel score late to salvage two draws
A goal in injury time helped Guardian Angel Sports Club hold Dempo Sports Club to a 2-2 draw in the Goa Pro League.
Jovial Dias scored in the 15th minute to put the Angels into the lead. In the second half, the Golden Eagles came out stronger and equalized through Shallum Pires off a corner. 1-1 in the 58th minute.
Dempo went ahead in the 79th minute. An interception by Angel defender, Leny Fernandes, resulted in an own goal. Deep into injury time, Joel Barretto slotted in a header by Mevan Dias from close to make it 2-2.
In the next round, another stoppage time goal handed Guardian Angel a 1-1 draw against Youth Club of Manora.
Mevan Dias connected with a pass from Leny Fernandes to slot it past the Manora keeper to earn a point for his team.
Nicholas Fernandes scored for Manora in the 20th minute and looked like the newcomers would notch their first win. However, the Angel substitute decided to play the devil’s advocate.
Guardian Angel SC are unbeaten with a win and two draws, while Manora picked up their first points of the campaign.
FC Goa respond with back-to-back wins
Having lost their opening match, FC Goa responded with back-to-back wins.
The first win was a 2-1 victory over Calangute Association. It was a hard fought win which was secured in the final 10 minutes.
Jijar Terang had put the Calangute in front with a well-taken goal in the 36th minute. Kouame dispossessed FC Goa defender Serineo and passed it to the debutant, whose shot from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.
The goalscorer let his team down when he was given his marching orders following a poor tackle in the 79th minute. The Junior Gaurs levelled in the very next minute via a header by Aaren D’Silva.
Two minutes from time, Aaren rose highest to nod in Deeshank Kunkalikar’s cross into the back of the net to book all three points from the match.
In the next round, the Junior Gaurs got the better of Dempo with a 2-1 win.
Vasim Inamdar opened the tally for the Junior Gaurs in the 43rd minute. The goalscorer turned provider in the 63rd minute as Lalremruata doubled the lead.
Darrel Mascrenhas pulled one back for Dempo in the 68th minute. The Golden Eagles did create opportunities to equalize, but the development side of the Indian Super League team held on to the lead to take their tally to 6 points. Dempo are on 4 points after their first defeat of the season.
Velsao score at both ends in 1-1 draw
Velsao SCC and SESA FA played out a 1-1 draw. Velsao had taken the lead in the 32nd minute through Klusner Pereria.
However, the hopes of a first win in the competition was dented courtesy an own goal by Viraj Naik.
The teams occupy the bottom two places with one point each to their name.
