Vasco SC and Velsao SCC registered important wins to move up the table in the Goa Professional League. Calangute Association’s Dominic Fernandes scored a hat-trick over Bardez FC.


5-star show by Beneston for Vasco 


Vasco Sports Club continued their fine run in the Goa Professional League with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Bardez Football Club at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa.

Taking control of the game from the first whistle, Vasco SC created openings in the Bardez penalty area. Darren Rebello failed to capitalize on the chances.

Beneston put his team in front at the 20th-minute mark. Penn Orji, Vasco’s foreign recruit, with the assist. 

After Moises D’Sa doubled the lead at the hour mark, Vasco SC went on a rampage. Penn Orji scored the third goal in the 71st minute, after receiving a pass from midfield.

Moises D’Sa stepped up with two assists. First, he set up Anil, who scored the fourth for Vasco in the 77th minute and Beneston Barretto netted his brace in the 78th minute to take the final tally to 5-0.

Later in the match, Vasco SC’s Neville Albuquerque went into the referee’s books for rough play.

The win takes the Port Towners to sixth place with a points tally of 23. As for Bardez FC, the defeat piles further misery as they are rooted to the bottom of the table with just six points and a goal difference of -32.

Port Towners beat Panjim Footballers

Earlier in the week, two goals in the second-half enabled Vasco Sports Club to score a comfortable 2-0 win over Panjim Footballers at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa.

The young Panjim side was no match to the experienced Port Town side which dictated terms right from the first whistle. The opening minutes of the game saw Aman Govekar and Anil Gaonkar presented with chances, however, they failed to keep their composure in the rival box.

Panjim Footballers did have a to go ahead in the first half, but Vasco SC keeper, Sanju Thapa, produced a brilliant save to deny V Miranda. At the other end, Beneston Barreto was denied by the Panjim goalkeeper.

The Capital City team was dealt with a major blow after Joel Colaco received his second yellow for deliberately handling the ball in the 53rd minute.

Vasco Sports Club made numerical advantage count almost immediately. Beneston received a defense-splitting pass from Penn Orji and smashed the ball past the Panjim goalkeeper.

The final half an hour saw Vasco SC totally outplaying their opponents but the strikers will have to learn from their missed chances as Anil, Beneston missed easy chances to score.

The lead was doubled when Neville Soares reacted quickly to a save by the rival keeper off Penn Orji’s strike. Soares did not make a mistake to convert from close range.

Panjim Footballers goalkeeper, Sherwin, had come up with outstanding saves to keep the scoreline at 2-0.

Dominic scores hat-trick as Calangute humble Bardez 

Dominic Fernandes scored a hat-trick in Calangute Association’s 4-1 win over Bardez Football Club at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa.

Bardez FC took time to settle in the game and was on their back foot throughout the first half. The hat-trick hero put Calangute ahead in the game in the 15th minute which turned out to be the only goal of the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, it was once again Dominic Fernandes who consolidated his side’s lead at the hour mark with a simple placement shot, 2-0.

Richard Cardozo pulled a goal back for Bardez in the 65th minute. Bardez FC pressed in search of the equalizing goal but then they couldn’t break down Calangute.

At the other end, Calangute Association scored two more goals in the dying minutes of the game to take the game beyond Bardez’ reach.

Sachin scored the third in the 2nd minute of injury time before Dominic completed his hat-trick in the 94th minute.

Velsao SCC drub Calangute Association

Velsao Sports and Cultural Club registered a convincing three-goal win over Calangute Association at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa.

After dominating the play for most parts, Velsao went ahead in the 41st minute through Manjunath Rathod who connected well to head in Leny Fernandes cross. Velsao SCC led 1-0 at the break.

Flan Gomes doubled the lead at the hour mark, capitalizing from close after the Calangute goalkeeper pushed the ball into his path.

The Calangute strikers failed to keep their composure in front of the goal, while the Velsao team didn’t. Remedios Vaz put the game to bed in the 74th minute as Velsao registered a convincing 3-0 win.

After this round, Calangute Association is in 11th position with 10 points.

Cultured Velsao ease past Panjim Footballers

Velsao Sports and Cultural Club registered a convincing 2-0 win against Panjim Footballers at the SAG grounds, Utorda.

Velsao went into the lead as early as the 8th minute. A smart build up from the left flank resulted in a cross from defender Bersal Viegas. Lalwang Bohham was lurking in the six-yard box and headed into the far corner to give his team the lead.

Panjim Footballers went in the hunt for the equalizer and put the Velsao defense under pressure time and again. Daryl Costa had two clear chances but could not tap the ball in from the six-yard box. Alston Camotio also failed to guide the ball into the rival net on another occasion. Seconds before the end of the first half, Prasil Kankonkar ‘s shot from outside the box missed the mark narrowly.

The home team regrouped after the halftime break and put Panjim Footballers on the back foot. The Capital City side rearguard fell on the 69th minute. Joseph Pereira scoring a great goal off a cross from Lalwang.

Panjim Footballers threatened to score but was thwarted by Velsao keeper Presley Mascarenhas.

With this win, Velsao Sports and Cultural Club has moved to the 7th place on the league table, displacing Guardian Angel SC with collecting 17. Panjim Footballers remain on 10th position with 11 points.
