RoundGlass Punjab FC have appointed former Bengaluru FC manager Ashley Westwood as the new Head Coach ahead of the 2021-22 I-League season. The 44-year-old former player-turned coach was last seen in the role of technical director at ATK.
As a player, Westwood was part of the academy at Manchester United and switched over to Crewe Alexandra FC as a pro in 1995. Over the years, he represented Sheffield Wednesday, Northampton Town and Wrexham AFC among other clubs in various divisions in the English football league system. He also played briefly in the English Premier League with Bradford City.
Ashley started his managerial career as player-manager with Kettering Town FC in the Conference National in 2012. In 2013, he joined newly-formed Bengaluru FC in the I-League as their first head coach. He won the league in the club’s first season of existence and he would go onto repeat the feat in the 2015-16 season. Under Westwood, the Blues picked up the Federation Cup as well in 2014-15.
After leaving BFC in 2016, he joined Malaysian club Penang FC in 2016 and the following year joined ATK as technical director. He also took charge of the club as interim manager in 2018 after Teddy Sheringham was sacked.
The role with Punjab FC is Ashley’s first prominent role after his stint with ATK.
