ATK Mohun Bagan have prised away Hugo Boumous from Mumbai City FC in what is widely believed to be a record-breaking transfer for the midfielder. Prior to the start of last season, MCFC paid around 1.76 crores plus taxes to facilitate a move from FC Goa.

Of French-Moroccan nationality, Hugo was born in Rennes, France, and spent his formative years at the academy of Stade Lavallois FC. He transitioned to the senior team in the 2014-15 season and made his French Ligue 2 debut against Chamois Niortais FC.

In 2016, he moved to Moroccan club Moghreb Tétouan under the tutelage of current Mumbai City FC coach Sergio Lobera. After almost two seasons in the Moroccan first tier Botola Pro 1, Boumous followed his manager to FC Goa in February of 2018 and made a few appearances towards the end of the 2017-18 season.

Over the last three seasons in the ISL, Boumous has been one of the standout players in the tournament. He helped FC Goa win the league in 2019-20 and picked up the Hero of the League award for his trailblazing year with the Gaurs. The season before that, he won the Super Cup with FC Goa (2019).

Last season, the 25-year-old attacking midfielder followed his coach Lobera to Mumbai City FC on a two-year deal. A few niggles and suspensions saw him make 16 appearances for the club which yielded three goals and seven assists. Mumbai City FC went onto complete a historic double last season with the club picking up the ISL League Winners shield and the ISL Championship trophy.

Cumulatively, in three and a half seasons in the ISL, Boumous has featured in 58 matches in which he has scored 19 goals and assisted 24. The five-year deal for Boumous marks the second foreign signing for ATKMB this season following the signing of Finnish international Joni Kauko on a two-year deal.

According to KhelNow, the transfer fee is two crore rupees and Boumous is expected to be paid 12.5 crores over the next five years.

Hugo Boumous (Analysis)

A data driven thread on Hugo Boumous, and what he brings to the table for @atkmohunbaganfc:

(Analysis and Visuals by @KeepItRowllin )

Hugo's strongest suit is his playmaking. He ranks top among attacking mids for assists p90, and he completes a whopping 70% of his 3.3 dribbles attempted p90.
It is safe to say that there is no creator quite like him in the league

However, the same cannot be said about his defensive stats. He isn't the hardest worker on the pitch, and is known for having a temper.
Though he does win a fair amount of ground and aerial duels, there are defensively better players in his position

These are the locations of his key passes. He primarily creates from open play, but is no stranger to taking set-pieces. A threat from any location, Boumous does best when he is given his freedom

FInally, his shot locations. All 3 of his goals came from open play, from an xG of roughly 4.3. He didn't score as much as he did in the season before, but he consistently shot from good locations which is a positive.

Having signed @adnan_hugo on a 5 year deal, the #Mariners have gone from strength to strength. He joins a squad full of elite foreigners and Indians who are hungry for silverware. With his arrival, Habas can rest easy knowing that his team will create a plethora of chances
