Odisha FC have signed 31-year-old South African midfielder Cole Alexander on a two-year deal ahead of the 2020-21 Indian Super League.

From Cape Town, Alexander turned pro with local club Ajax Cape Town (Currently known as Cape Town Spurs FC) in 2008. Cape Town Spurs FC was formerly owned by Dutch football club AFC Ajax until they sold their stake last month after the club failed to qualify for the top-tier South African Premier Division.

Cole left Cape Town in 2014 and over the next six years spent two seasons each at South African Premier Division clubs Polokwane City FC, SuperSport United FC and more recently Bidvest Wits FC – from where he joins Odisha FC.

The central midfielder played under current Odisha FC coach Stuart Baxter when the gaffer was managing SuperSport United FC in the 2016-17 season. Baxter’s recommendation led to Alexander leaving South Africa to play football overseas for the first time in his career.

Over the course of his career in the DStv Premiership (South African Premier Division), Cole has featured in 205 games and has 11 goals and six assists to his credit.

We are delighted to secure Cole to our squad. I have worked with Cole with Bafana and he brings a combination of high energy, character and quality.

His personality will enrich our squad environment and I am sure he will be popular among our fans.

Stuart Baxter, Head Coach, Odisha FC

I am extremely delighted to join Odisha FC and play in the Indian Super League for the first time.

It will be really great to play under Coach Stuart Baxter again and I can’t wait to meet my teammates. I am very excited and looking forward to the season ahead.

I have heard a lot about the special fans that the Club has and though they will not be in the stadiums with us this year, we will carry them in our hearts and try and make them proud.

I hope we can achieve something special at Odisha FC in the upcoming seasons.
