Odisha FC have signed former Flamengo striker Diego Maurício on a one-year-deal ahead of ISL 7.
From the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Diego was part of local club Flamengo’s academy between the years 2006 and 2010. In 2010, he made the transition to the senior team who were competing in the Brazilian top-tier Série A.
After a couple of seasons at the club, in 2012, Maurício left Rio to play club football in Russia briefly followed by a season at the Portuguese club Vitória FC.
In 2015, Diego returned to Brazil – this time to the state of São Paulo where he turned up for Bragantino. During his time with the club, he was loaned out to clubs in Asia and he ended up playing in the Saudi Professional League, K League 1, Thai League 1 and the Chinese Super League.
Early in 2019, Maurício joined Korean football club Busan IPark who were competing in the second tier K League 2 and helped them win promotion. He left the club after a year and joined Brazilian Série B club CSA from where he joins Odisha FC.
The 29-year-old played alongside Ronaldinho at Flamengo early in his career and was part of the Brazilian U-20 setup in 2011 alongside players like Neymar, Casemiro, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino. Over the course of his career, he has made 225 appearances in which he has scored 38 goals and assisted 28.
In Diego, Odisha FC have signed a player who is known for his very direct style of play which combines his natural attributes of pace and power alongside his dribbling ability.
We are delighted to secure the services of Diego. He is a player who can both combine with his teammates and also create chances on his own.
When he gets to know the squad, he will be a major asset for us.
