FC Goa have signed 28-year-old Spanish winger Jorge Ortiz Mendoza on a two-year contract ahead of the seventh season of the Indian Super League.

Hailing from the province of Toledo in Spain, Ortiz was at the youth academy of Getafe CF during his formative years. He turned pro in 2011 with the fourth-tier Spanish football club CD Madridejos.

Over the next few seasons, Jorge turned up for a number of Spanish clubs competing in the Segunda División (2nd tier), Segunda División B (third tier) and the Tercera División (fourth tier). Notable among these are Atlético Madrid B, Cultural Leonesa and Atlético Baleares – from where he joins FC Goa.

Last season in the Segunda División B with Atlético Baleares, Ortiz scored eight goals and assisted three from 20 appearances. His performances helped his side to the top of Segunda División B Group 1.

There were reports that Mumbai City FC were also in the running for the winger, but FC Goa won the race to sign the Spaniard.

After losing a clutch of players both foreign and domestic to CFG’s Mumbai City FC, this is FC Goa’s second foreign signing behind Spanish forward Igor Angulo. The Indian players they have signed so far this season are Makan Winkle Chothe, Devendra Murgaonkar, Sanson Pereira and Redeem Tlang.

I’m really happy and eager to start and to meet my new teammates. The league is very competitive and this is a brilliant club.

I have seen games of FC Goa play and found them to be playing at a very high level.

I spoke to the coach, and other officials and I had no doubt that this was the place I would like to commit my future to.
