Football Delhi to launch Capital Cup from next year

Football Delhi to launch Capital Cup from next year

The governing body of Football in Delhi – Football Delhi have decided to launch an annual tournament comprising clubs from the Indian Super League (ISL), I-League and local clubs from Delhi.

The president of Football Delhi Shaji Prabhakaran said that they are planning to hold the tournament early next year and have requested the AIFF to find a window in the domestic calendar to hold the tournament. Football Delhi have also asked for the support of Sports Authority of India and the Delhi Government to conduct the tournament.

The tournament is likely to be a eight team league plus knockout competition. Four of the participating clubs will come from the ISL/I-League and four local clubs from Delhi will complete the eight. The tournament will be conducted at the Dr. Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi.

In a statement to PTI, Shaji added:

Without crowd, this tournament will have no meaning and the COVID-19 pandemic is unlikely to permit any tournament with a big crowd to happen this year. So, we are looking at early next year before the end of the season.

So, it is not that we want to stage the tournament in the next few months. But once the tournament is launched, it will be an annual affair.

Through Capital Cup we would like to energise local football and connect football fans with an inspiring football tournament where the best clubs and players would be seen in action.

It is our attempt to add another initiative to make Delhi a vibrant football city. Delhi’s Dr Ambedkar Stadium is one Stadium which has seen all the greats in action and the strong legacy of this stadium and city have to be revived with the Capital Cup.
