Flaming Oranje burn brightly
A 4-1 win over Panjim Footballers at the Duler Stadium has put Sporting Clube de Goa in a strong position to retain the Goa Professional League match.
Preston Rego, the Panjim Footballers goalkeeper shut out the Sporting attack with a good display in the first half to keep the scoreline down to 0-0.
Substitute Akeraj Martins broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half with a 25-yard strike to make it 1-0.
The scores were level in the 62nd minute when Clifton Fernandes’ 40-yard strike give little chance to Sporting’s goalkeeper, Akshat Hadkonkar.
The table-toppers were given an opportunity to regain the lead when Joyson Gauncar brought down Akeraj Martins in the box.
Joseph Clement converted from the spot to make it 2-1 in the 72nd minute.
In the additional time, Sporting Clube bolstered the scoreline with Marcus Mascarenhas adding a third while Kunal scored an own goal.
4-1 to Sporting Clube de Goa, but the match was much tighter than the scoreline suggests.
The Flaming Oranje continues to top the table with 40 points from 18 matches. They have scored 38 while conceding a miserly eight in return.
With four matches to play – three against teams from the bottom half of the table – the title appears to be heading to Vasco again.
Gawas on target as Panjim sneak past Sesa FA
Earlier in the week, Panjim Footballers picked up three points in the Goa Professional League, courtesy a 1-0 win over Sesa Football Academy at the Duler Stadium.
Chandan Gawas scored the match-winner in first-half injury time. Panjim Footballers are now in sixth place with 26 points from 18 matches.
Hadkonkar hattrick in Dempo’s win
Dempo Sports Club kept pace with the Goa Professional League leaders with back-to-back wins.
Suraj Hadkonkar scored a hattrick in Dempo’s 4-1 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club at the Dempo SC Academy Ground in Ella, Old Goa.
The visitors who went ahead at the half-hour mark courtesy Aslon Oliveira but the Dempo equalized in the first-half injury time through Suraj Hadkonkar.
The youngster scored his team’s second with a freekick in the 56th minute before completing his hattrick four minutes later.
The dominant display was completed when Suraj set up Joaquim Abranches in the 62nd minute to score the fourth goal.
Golden Eagles flying high in second place
Dempo followed up their 4-1 win with a comfortable 3-0 win over Sesa Football Academy in the Goa Professional League match at Sirsaim Ground.
Beevan D’Mello opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a simple tap in courtesy an Ariston Costa assist.
After the break, Suraj Hadkonkar continued his goalscoring form with a free-kick in the 52nd minute to take his tally to eight goals in the season.
The match was put to bed when the veterans, Beevan D’Mello and Joaquim Abranches, combined for the latter to make it 3-0 in the 68th minute.
The win takes Dempo SC to 37 points – three behind Sporting Clube de Goa.
Gritty Velsao script narrow win over Vasco
Bottom-placed Velsao Sports & Cultural Club has put a spin on the relegation fight of the Goa Professional League with back-to-back 1-0 wins against their relegation candidates.
A 1-0 win over Vasco Sports Club at the Navelim Ground gave Velsao the much-needed three points.
With little creativity in the play, Velsao subbed in Rohan Uttar Kamble in the 30th minute. The move paid dividends within 10 minutes as the substitute put his team ahead.
Vasco SC is now one point ahead of the bottom-placed teams.
Relegation dogfight: Velsao come up on top
Velsao compounded Sesa FA’s misery with a 1-0 win at the Rosary Ground, Navelim.
A 34th-minute strike by Bersal Viegas secured the win for Velsao as the fight for survival intensified in the Goa Professional League.
The all-important goal was scored after a long throw-in was flicked in the box by Karamoko Usman. Viegas tapped in from close to make it 1-0.
The second half saw Velsao SCC dominate the play with Inacio and Remedios hitting the woodwork.
Velsao SCC now has 15 points from 17 matches, equal with Sesa FA who also have similar points from an equal number of matches.
Sesa FA’s three losses in the round third – their sixth consecutive loss – have put their first season in the GPL under jeopardy.
Green Brigade sit pretty in fourth spot
Three second-half goals helped Salgaocar Football Club register a 3-0 win over Calangute Association in the Goa Professional League at the Village Panchayat Ground, Nagoa.
Salgaocar FC started the match on the front foot and enjoyed better ball possession. Calangute Association barely threatened the Salgaocar backline. However, the half time score remained goalless.
In the second half, Stephen Satarkar was subbed in the 56th minute to add more teeth to the attack.
The move paid dividends as the substitute put his team ahead in the 69th with a simple tap in off a Sanson Pereira cross.
Up by a goal, Salgaocar FC began to dominate proceedings and added a second within four minutes through a Chaitan Komarpant header.
Stephen made it 3-0 in the 79th minute to seal the three points.
He nearly completed his hat trick when he dribbled past five Calangute Association players but his weak shot was parried away by the Calangute goalkeeper.
Salgaocar FC moved to the fourth spot with 29 points from 18 matches. Calangute Association remains on the ninth spot with 16 points in 15 matches.
