Bhawanipore FC and East Bengal FC are locked on 13 points with table toppers Peerless SC in the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ league table.
Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting slip up, while George Telegraph register a win to climb to fourth spot.
Bhawanipore keep title hopes alive
Bhawanipore FC kept their title hopes alive following a 3-0 win over Mohammedan SC at Mohammedan Sporting Ground. The loss has effectively ended Mohammedan’s title challenge.
Leonce Dodoz showed great composure to give Bhawanipore the lead at the ninth minute mark. The Black Panthers pushed forward for an equalizer, which played into the hands of Bhawanipore. Dodoz picked out Kamo’s pass to produce a fine strike into the top-right corner to make it 2-0 in the 35th minute.
Bhawanipore put the match to bed when Beton Kamo tapped in his eighth goal of the campaign in the 72nd minute and make it 3-0.
Sankarlal Chakraborty’s men go level on points with league leaders Peerless SC on 13 points, but are on second place courtesy an inferior goal-difference.
Aryans catch Mohun Bagan cold
Mohun Bagan failed to keep up with the winning momentum after a 2-1 loss against Aryan Club at the Kalyani Stadium in the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ match.
Following a goalless first period, Aryan went ahead with a volley by Gatch in the 63rd minute. The Aryan team’s fine showing was rewarded in the 80th minute following a successful free-kick by Sandeep Oraw in the 80th minute to double the lead.
Bagan grabbed a consolation goal in the 90th minute, when Subho Ghosh’s header found the net, but could not avoid its second loss.
The win takes Aryan Club to seventh place with eight points, while Mohun Bagan slip down to fifth place with 11 points.

Colado inspires East Bengal to a win
A brace by Santos Colado helped East Bengal beat Kalighat Milan Sangha 4-2 at the East Bengal Grounds.
Kalighat took a surprise lead with a strike from Tuhin Sikdar in the 37th minute, however Bidyashagar Singh scored the equalizer four minutes later. The two teams were locked at 1-1 at the break.
East Bengal caught a lucky break at the hour mark when Kalighat’s Tuhin Das turned the ball into his own net. Five minutes later, Kalighat’s luck worsened when Colado’s shot caught a lucky deflection to make it 3-1 for East Bengal.
Rahul Paswan reduced the margin in the 80th minute. The very next minute, Bidyashagar turned provider to enable Colado to complete his brace and ensure the win.
The Red and Gold climbs to third place with 13 points, while Kalighat drops to the relegation zone.
East Bengal to appeal charges
East Bengal has decided to approach the India Football Association (IFA) with a request to reduce the punishment slapped on its players and coaches for manhandling the referee after the club’s 1-0 defeat to Peerless.
The IFA disciplinary committee suspended East Bengal’s Lalrindika Ralte and Mehtab Singh for one match and impose a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. The players were asked to pay the fine within 72 hours, failing which they would be suspended for one year.
The IFA also suspended team manager Debraj Chowdhury and goalkeeping coach Abhra Mondal for one year from IFA events.
George Telegraph & Southern Samity bag wins
George Telegraph move up to fourth spot with a 3-0 win over Rainbow AC at the Barasat Stadium. Joel Sunday bagged a brace, while Ayushman put the result to bed.
Over at the Gayeshpur Stadium, Southern Samity climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Calcutta Customs. Uttam Rai, the Sikkimese striker from Churchill Brothers, bagged himself a brace to ensure three points.
