Jamshedpur FC have brought on-board experienced Spanish coach Antonio Iriondo to replace César Ferrando for the upcoming Indian Super League season.

A player-turned-manager, Iriondo started coaching Spanish teams in the eighties predominantly in the Segunda División, Segunda División B and Tercera Division (second, third and fourth tier of the Spanish league system).

Some of the notable clubs he managed over the years are AD Villaviciosa de Odón, Atlético Madrid C, Rayo Vallecano B, Carabanchel (he was a former player here), SS Reyes and Toledo. When Antonio was with Rayo Vallecano B, he took over the senior side in La Liga on an interim basis towards the end of the 2002-03 season.

Iriondo joins Jamshedpur FC from Rayo Majadahonda – a club he has been at the helm of since 2012 in what was his third stint at the club (previously ’93-94′, ’96-98′). He helped the club achieve promotion to the Segunda División (2nd tier) in the 2017-18 season. However, the following season which is the recently concluded 2018-19 season, Rayo got relegated back to the Segunda División B – the third tier.

The 65-year-old replaces another experienced Spanish manager in César Ferrando who could only guide the Red Miners to fifth in the 2018-19 Indian Super League – just out of reach of the play-offs.

Jamshedpur have signed a quiver full of Indian Arrows’ players for the upcoming season and if they progress and get playing time under the new coach, it will go a long way in helping the National Team.

I am thrilled to be joining a club of Jamshedpur FC’s stature. The philosophy along with the grassroots and youth development structure that the club follows is the right way forward.

I’m excited about what we can do together, and I look forward to giving everyone who loves the club some special moments.
