ATK have announced the signing of 31-year-old Fijian international and Wellington Phoenix striker Roy Krishna for the 2019-20 ISL season.
Roy started his career in football with Labasa FC, a semi-professional club which competes in the National Football League (Fiji). After a successful stint at the club, he moved to the New Zealand Football Championship side Waitakere United where he scored 55 goals in 75 appearances and also picked up the Golden Boot in the 2012-13 season.
The forward spent six years at Waitakere United before moving to Auckland City for a short duration after which he signed for Wellington Phoenix – a club based in Wellington, New Zealand.
Wellington Phoenix aka The Nix compete in Austrialia’s top tier league, the A-League. Krishna did not find the step up in leagues too difficult and continued his prolific form for the club. In 122 appearances spread between the years 2014-2019, the forward scored 51 goals and assisted 26.
As a Fiji International, Roy has scored 23 goals in 35 appearances and was also called up to represent the national futsal team.
ATK finished out of the play-off positions in the ISL last season and their primary fault line was the lack of goal scoring prowess. The forwards Balwant Singh and Kalu Uche could only manage a goal apiece during the 2018-19 season.
In signing Roy Krishna, ATK have pulled off a coup of sorts. The forward was the highest scorer in the 2018-19 A-League with 18 goals coming in 26 appearances. The player also picked up the Johnny Warren Medal for his performances over the course of the season.
Roy Krishna is our first international striker signing of the season. He is a prolific striker with leadership skills under his belt.
He will add attack and variety to the team and his confidence will give an edge. I am very happy to have him in ATK.
