After signing Northeast United’s head coach Eelco Schattorie a fortnight ago, Kerala Blasters went back in for seconds and this time came up with star striker Bart Ogbeche.

The former PSG man was a revelation at Northeast United last season and guided them to the play-offs where they lost out to eventual winners Bengaluru FC. Ogbeche was also the league’s second highest goalscorer with 12 goals and two assists from 18 appearances.

The 34-year-old Ogbeche has had a long and storied career right from his beginnings at the PSG youth academy. He went on to appear for the PSG senior team between the years 2001 and 2005 before making his way to Spanish clubs Deportivo Alavés and Real Valladolid. After his stint in Spain, Bart turned up for Dutch clubs SC Cambuur and Willem II from where he would sign for Northeast United for the 2018-19 Indian Super League season.

Bart Ogbeche was also part of the Nigerian team in the 2002 FIFA World Cup and made two appearances for the Super Eagles in the tournament.

The 2018-19 season for Kerala Blasters has been a tale of woe. Managerial changes, paucity of goals and lack of definitive style of play meant they finished ninth on the table and won only two games.

With the appointment of Eelco Schattorie, the signing of Mario Arqués and now bringing in Bart Ogbeche to lead the attack, the Blasters have made astute signings and the Manjappada can look towards the upcoming season with renewed optimism.
