MATCH REPORT

The defending champions Chennaiyin FC have officially hit rock bottom after a chastening defeat against fellow bottom-table dwellers Delhi Dynamos.

The Chennai side started the game brighter of the two sides with Raphael Augusto driving them forward. They had a couple of early sighters on goal, but the Delhi custodian Dorronsoro ensured nothing went past him.

Delhi took the lead in the 16th minute when a low cross from the left flank by Nanda Kumar found Daniel Lalhlimpuia who got his first goal of the season with a diving header.

Raphael Augusto got the equaliser for Chennai from a spot-kick resulting from a Mohammed Sajid Dhot foul in the 18 yard box.

Augusto had a great chance in first-half stoppage time to get Chennai in the lead, but he shot high and wide from six yards out.

The second half started in the same vein as the first half with Chennai looking threatening from set-pieces. But it was Delhi who capitalised from a great bit of counter-attacking play.

Inigo Calderon lost the ball deep in Delhi’s half – the Delhi forward Kaludjerovic got Chhangte away with a great ball in space. Chhangte squared the ball to Bikramjit Singh and the midfielder finished with aplomb.

After taking the lead, Delhi scored another goal a few minutes later to hit the final nail on Chennai’s campaign this season. Nanda Kumar took a shot from outside the box which picked up a wicked deflection off the Chennai defender Mailson and ended up in the net. 3-1 to Delhi.

Delhi will be ecstatic after finally picking up their first win of the season before the long winter break and they are finally off the bottom of the table.

As far as Chennaiyin are concerned, their league campaign is over, but they have a remote chance at redemption with the AFC Cup playoffs scheduled in March next year.
