Mohun Bagan ends East Bengal’s stranglehold on the Calcutta Football League

Mohun Bagan ended East Bengal’s stranglehold over the Calcutta Football League with a 2-0 win over Calcutta Customs on Wednesday.

Topping the table with 26 points and gaining an unassailable lead of six points over East Bengal, the Mariners clinched their 30th Calcutta Football League Premier Division A title with a match in hand.

Playing in front of a packed crowd at the Mohun Bagan ground in Kolkata, Mohun Bagan looked in complete control right from the start and took the lead in the fourth minute through Henry Kisseka.

The Ugandan striker made it 2-0 when he controlled a through ball from Dipanda around the six-yard box before slotting it past the Calcutta Custom custodian, Suvam Sen, at the far post.

The win ended the eight-year winning streak of East Bengal who has won consecutive titles since 2010. This is Mohun Bagan’s 30th league title, while East Bengal has won the title 39 times

East Bengal’s title hopes were dashed when they were beaten 2-1 by Mohammedan S.C. on Tuesday. Philip Adjah scoring a brace in the 87th and 94th minute to deny East Bengal’s chances of retaining the title.

Mohun Bagan’s final fixture is against Mohammedan Sporting on September 18, while East Bengal hosts the relegated FCI team.

Tutu’s foot in mouth moment

The win was celebrated by the Mohun Bagan president, Swapan Sadhan Bose, who is fondly known as Tutu. He compared the triumph to a son being born after seven daughters.

“Daughters were being born for the last seven years, suddenly a son has been born. How would you like it if that was the case with you? I have the same feeling”, said ‘Tutu’ to the presenter of Sadhna News.

Tutu did try to make amends on Thursday as he released a statement where he tried to use the “I’m not racist, I have a (insert minority race) friend”defense, by saying that he understands the importance of the role of women in his life – like his daughter-in-law and granddaughter.

Ah! The people running Indian football! Quite a shocker considering that the reputation is squeaky clean. Especially the top man himself.
